General Information About Maltepe University

Marmara Educational Institutions were established in 1991 by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our university, Hüseyin Şimşek, under the motto “From Kindergarten to University.” İstanbul Marmara Education Foundation (İMEV) was founded in 1996, followed by Maltepe University in 1997. Maltepe University was established by Law No. 4282 dated July 9, 1997, and is a public legal entity subject to the provisions of Law No. 2547 concerning foundations and higher education institutions. The university began its educational activities by admitting students from an additional quota in the 1997-1998 academic year.

İMEV, to which Maltepe University is affiliated, continues its foundation tradition comprehensively by providing extensive services especially in the fields of education, health, environment, culture, art, and social areas.

Marmara Education Village was established in 2002 on a 1000-acre open and 300-acre closed area among pine forests to unite the Marmara Educational Institutions, primarily İMEV. This campus, which also houses Maltepe University, includes the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Conservatory, School of Nursing, Vocational School, School of Foreign Languages, and Graduate School. Associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs are conducted in these academic units, and many studies are carried out in research and application centers. Students who complete their Basic Medical Sciences education at the Faculty of Medicine in Marmara Education Village continue their clinical training at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Training and Research Hospitals located in the Maltepe city center. In summary, our university offers education and training services through 9 faculties, a conservatory, one graduate school, 3 schools, and one vocational school, striving to contribute to Turkish and world science through scientific research and publications. Additionally, the campus features the Marmara Open-Air Theater with an 8,000-person capacity and two film and television studios each covering 2,000 square meters.

The educational principles of our university are summarized in the motto: “Free in Thought, Modern in Education, Universal in Science.” Our main goal is to prepare young people who have internalized the fundamental principles of the Republic, are committed to Atatürk’s ideals, adhere to all rules of secular democracy, and who are active, rational, thoughtful, well-read, inquisitive, productive, and capable of competing with the youth of the world in every field, thus preparing them for Turkey’s future.

Maltepe University places great importance on internationalization. The first steps in this regard were implemented in the early 2000s, with the Erasmus Charter obtained in 2004 and the Extended Erasmus Charter in 2007. Maltepe University has always been among the pioneers in every internationalization initiative taken by universities in Turkey. In this context, student and academic staff exchanges are conducted, and strong partnerships are established with prestigious universities worldwide for joint research and scientific projects. International exchange programs and joint projects are important indicators of Maltepe University’s international quality. Moreover, Diploma Supplements began to be awarded to bachelor’s graduates in 2010 and to postgraduate graduates in 2012.

One of the issues Maltepe University has given special attention to from the beginning is quality education. Through the Quality Management Coordination Office established at the university, all processes related to quality in higher education are closely monitored, and Maltepe University approaches all its stakeholders, especially its students, with this understanding.

Having proven its strength in this area with the certificates it has obtained and after more than 21 years of experience, Maltepe University, with its distinguished and experienced academic and administrative staff, updated programs in line with the developments and expectations of the era, diverse and rich academic infrastructure facilities (laboratories, information and document centers, internet access, etc.), its commitment to sharing research results with society, social and cultural activities that encourage participation, has largely completed its institutionalization and taken its distinguished place in the Turkish university system.
